Shaoli Wang was born in Qingdao and grew up in the aftermath of China's Cultural Revolution. She trained as an art teacher and graduated from the Department of Fines Arts of Qingdao Normal College, specializing in children's book illustration, gouache and oil painting. She participated in numerous exhibitions in China and garnered many awards for her art and teaching. She was named one of the ten best young artists of Qingdao for two consecutive terms before immigrating to Canada in 1995.
A passionate and inventive artist, a brilliant colourist with unbound imagination, Shaoli paints and exhibits and is a well-loved teacher in Vancouver, BC. She has collaborated and continues to collaborate with eminent writer and GG-winner Paul Yee on his books for children. The lushly illustrated Bamboo was a finalist for the BC Book Prize for illustrated books.
